Reasons to Believe Meeting
November 9, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Please join us for our Reasons to Believe chapter meeting on Fri., Nov. 9 at 7:00PM in the Family Center Rooms 524-525. Reasons to Believe Chapter Officer Dr. Kirk Bertsche will present “An Overview of Radiation Therapy.” Dr. Bertsche is an accelerator physicist at Accuray, where he is involved with advanced research in radiation therapy. In our lifetimes, 40% of us will be diagnosed with cancer. Over 1.7 million new cancer cases appear in the US annually. Two thirds of all cancer patients will receive radiation therapy as part of their treatment. Radiation therapy today generally uses high-energy X-rays produced by an electron linear accelerator. But a variety of alternative radiation types (neutrons, protons, ions) and radiation sources (synchrotrons, cyclotrons, radioisotopes) are used as well. Dr. Bertsche will present an overview of radiation therapy’s interesting history, physics, and technology. He will survey the breadth of radiation types and sources which are used today, with emphasis on electron linear accelerators for X-ray production. He will also discuss recent developments in radiation therapy and proposals for new radiation therapy devices. In Genesis 1:28 God gave Adam and Eve dominion over creation and told them to subdue the earth. It is an interesting fact that despite its deadly potential this technology is so predictable and controllable that it can be used safely and reliably on a wide variety of patients for a wide variety of types of cancer. Is this just a lucky coincidence or evidence of God’s providential care for us? Our meetings are always free of charge. We will have a drawing for some free RTB resources. Refreshments will be served. Guests are encouraged to come.
