A MINISTRY UPDATE FROM DAVE AND CONNIE DEAL
It’s been a whirlwind few months for us and as Spring Training wraps up we are reflecting on all that the Lord has been doing. We’d love to share some of that with you!
Dave was able to once again minister to the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners teams at the Peoria Sports Complex this spring. His chapel series talked about the difference between being a “Christian” and being a “disciple of Jesus.” Living as a disciple is a much more radical and challenging way to live, but it is what Jesus called us to be… not just “Christians”. Dave encouraged these men to live out John 13:35 “By this everyone will know that you are one of my disciples, if you love one another.” When we truly love each other, people are drawn to want to know Jesus! He also was able to have Jeff Axelson, brother of Matt (family friend whose story was portrayed in Lone Survivor), come and share with the players about the journey their family has been on these past several years.
As a family we also enjoyed using hospitality as a means to encourage and support many ballplayers and their families. Having them into our home and eating together helped to deepen relationships and also was a lot of fun! Hosting the weekly Bible study at our church was a highlight as we saw an average of 25-30 players and wives come together to study the “Signs” that Jesus gave us throughout His ministry here on Earth.
Connie was invited to travel to Toledo, OH with the ASU women’s basketball team last week as they played in the opening rounds of the NCAA tournament. She was able to provide chapels for the team before both games. They beat Vanderbilt in the first round and then went on to play undefeated Notre Dame in the second round. The girls fought hard but their season finished up in Toledo. One benefit from being on this trip was Connie being able to build deeper relationships with several members of the staff, as well as continuing to connect with the players themselves. Please pray for more opportunities to spend quality discipleship time with the girls now that their season has ended.
We’ve also experienced some challenges this spring as we’ve dealt with repeated car troubles and, more significantly, received news of the passing of seven people we know in just the past couple of weeks. The ever-increasing reminders that this world is not our home have sobered us and caused us to appreciate each day the Lord has given us to serve Him and bring glory to His name. We are thankful for the truths found in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18: “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary but what is unseen is eternal.”
