Two LACS teachers, Nico Roundy and Brad Burman, had their heads shaved in chapel on Tuesday. This was the culmination of a fundraiser, Pennies for Patients, in which the students brought in pennies to help children with cancer. The staff thought the students might raise $500, but they raised over $2000. At $500 they earned a week of free dress; a big deal for our kids. They were told that if they raised $1000, the teachers would shave their heads. The students exceeded and doubled our expectations. LACS is blessed with great staff members who are willing to give up their hair to inspire the kids!

Steve and Carol Lyons, Evangelical Free Church, have now started their ministry at a Teacher's College, teaching conversational English and religion. Steve and a teammate, George Mbago, are team teaching the chronological story of God and Man to the almost 200 students in the religion class. They are reminded daily that these teachers will fan out all across the country after graduating, and pray that some of them will carry the Gospel with them as they go. Pray for the almost 200 students who are voluntarily coming to "Religion Class" where they are hearing the story of redemption, that the Lord will direct the Lyons and their teammates to individual students who have missions on their hearts and who are eager to be trained, that God will send His messengers to the tribes in Tanzania that are still unreached with the Gospel.

The college also has provided a house (construction nearly finished) and they are in it. They are still learning the intricacies of how electricity, water, phone and internet coverage and other such things work, or not, and the guest room is still full of boxes, but the welcome mat is out.

As a local church, we believe that human betterment and social improvement are essential products of the gospel - not just here in our community, but also throughout our sphere of influence.

For many years now we have been supporting Radha Manickam's ministry in Cambodia. Several people from BCC have traveled to the region to co-labor and to share the gospel message. News from Radha comes this week and identifies some specific needs for the ministry there.

If you can help, please contact John Benza in the church office and let him know of your interest. Specifically, the needs are:

A motorcycle for the Center to run around for ministry cost $1,600

Three laptops to use for teachers and other ministry at the Center cost $1,500

Ten bunk beds for the Center at $150 each total $1,500

Bring in a power line for the Center, right now the Center operated without any power, we have to use car battery and a small generator for some light, to connect to main power line it will cost $13,000

Need for shipping one container of wheelchair from Japan (this is for fee at the Cambodia port and transportation in country) cost approximately $3,000

Need for my trip to Cambodia for the Summer $2,500

Radha writes: "Thank you for your support over the years, anything toward any need above would be appreciated. Your prayers for these needs are most appreciated."

The next milestone that is currently underway is the installation of the electrical conduits from the panels to the Inverters. Electricity created by the panels are carried via wire in conduits to the Inverter where it is converted from Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC) and then fed back in to the electrical Grid.

Activities in this sub-project include finding a place to attach the Inverter to the building and then running the conduits from the Inverters to the Roof adjacent to where the panels will be placed. SunLogic Solar is dong a very nice job in laying out the placement and running these conduits. Take a look at these pictures below.

With each passing day, the news out of Japan remains grim in the aftermath of the March 11th earthquake and tsunami disasters. News of the crippled nuclear reactors and release of radiation only compound the stress and grief of survivors. In these dark hours, many individuals and churches want to express the love of Jesus by giving to help relieve the immediate and overwhelming needs in Japan. The WorldVenture team in Japan is hosting the coordination of relief efforts in their ministry center in Tokyo.

High School Ministry Changes

Church Family -

As some of you may have already heard, Paul Standen announced in High School Sunday School yesterday morning that he is stepping down from his position here at the church. He has received an excellent job offer from a local company. Paul remains passionate about our High School students, but in the end he believes the Lord has opened so many doors with this new job opportunity that he and Cathryn are confident that this new position is where He would have Paul to be. We rejoice with Paul in this new endeavor!

Paul’s official start date with the new company is March 28th, making his last week full-time on staff ending March 27th. In order to help make this transition as smooth as possible for both leadership and the students, Paul is going to continue planning and leading Sunday mornings as well as coordinating and leading small groups until an interim or long-term replacement is found. Essentially through the end of this school year, Paul’s hope is that the students don’t see much of a difference in the normal Sunday and small group functions. In addition, Cathryn will thankfully remain with us on staff in her current position, and the Standens will remain a vital part of this church moving into the future.

This will be a transition in progress. To help launch this process, Paul, Ryan Shull (Middle School Director), and Pastor Steve are going to have a brief Parent Meeting this upcoming Sunday (Mar. 20) at 10:15 in the Chapel. We want to provide an open forum where parents and/or students can ask questions. We are also available for ongoing input and questions on an appointment basis as we move through this transition.

Let’s all be praying for the Standens, giving thanks to God for what He has done and will continue to do -

Solar Installation Progress Report

The installation of the solar panel mounting system is well underway. Peterson hall has been completed and is awaiting the solar panels and electrical connections. Work is now underway on Burkhart Hall.

The process involves securing the mounting rails, on which the panels will be attached, to the roof structure. This is done by making a small pilot hole through the existing roof membrane and then caulking and bolting a new flashing to the roof. Once the roof mounting bracket is in place, the rails will be attached and then the panels.

The pictures below show the steps taken to complete the task. For those wishing to see an explanation of how these roof penetrations are performed, you can watch the following manufacturers video below.

- X marks the spot for where the framing mount will be placed.

- A pilot hole is drilled into roof framing. Notice how thin the drill bit is for this pilot hole.

- Caulking around the tiny pilot hole to ensure no leakage.

- Install the new flashing over the caulking and aligning the pilot hole for the bolt placement. A good nine inches of flashing is slid under the existing roofing. The bolt bracket is secured at an angle so water rolling down the roof hits it at an angle and is deflect to the sides.

- Secure the flashing with a new lag bolt and rubber grommet screwed in to the pilot hole.

- Proceed to the next framing mount until the entire section is completed.

- Attach the mounting rails to the roof mounts and they are ready for the solar panels to be placed atop them.

Work will continue on Burkhart Hall (LACS School Building) next week and will then move to the Gym, Family Center, Fourplex and Office buildings. Once all the mounts are in place and the electrical conduits have been run, the panels will arrive and be installed. At this point, it looks like March will be used entirely for getting the mounting systems in place.

Stay tuned for more progress reports as the full implementation has many phases to it.

Japan Update - 3/13/2011

The following update was posted to the Missions on the Frontline and the WorldVenture web site late Saturday.

March 12, 2011- The news accounts and the images streaming out of Japan are heart-wrenching. The terror of the 8.9 earthquake and its subsequent tsunami resulting in such overwhelming devastation are disturbing to watch and to contemplate. In these early days after the quake and the tsunami, our hearts unite with all Jesus followers around the world in praying for the people of Japan in these tenuous times that the love of Christ would deeply touch their lives.

As was announced yesterday, all WorldVenture personnel have been accounted for and all are okay. However, many Japanese friends in northern Japan have not been heard from since the quake and the tsunami. Please pray for all concerned, those awaiting to hear news of loved ones, and those actually in the north and along the coast. Please pray for the Conservative Baptist Association of Japan (CBAJ) church families in...

1. Kurihara City. There are two CBAJ churches there and this is nearest to the epicenter.

2. Kessenuma City. This is the city that is in flames. There are two CBAJ churches there.

3. Natori City. This is where the tsunami inundated farm land. There is a church there as well.

4. There are 30+ churches within a 60 mile radius of the epicenter.

Ken Taylor, WorldVenture Japan Field Leader, reports that local church and mission groups in Japan are organizing for coordinated responses to the overwhelming needs. In the days to come, we anticipate releasing specific details in which individuals and churches can participate in those efforts.

In the midst of the heaviness of this tragedy, various WorldVenture personnel have been emailing, blogging, and facebooking their accounts of the earthquake and the hours following.

John and Eriko Houlette praise God for His protection of Eriko's parents in Sendai.

Ken and Bola Taylor shared that their kids, Luke and Tori, had an earthquake drill at their school the day before the earthquake struck. Given the transportation disruptions, the Taylors had six "new" sons from the Christian Academy in Japan stay with them overnight until they could be reunited with their parents. In each of the accounts, all are grateful for the emails and facebook postings expressing concern and prayers.

MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE DEVASTATES JAPAN

March 11, 2011 — An 8.9 earthquake struck the nation of Japan which resulted in a massive tsunami along the northern coast of the country. The quake struck 373 kilometers (230 miles) from Tokyo, according to the United States Geological Survey. International news media are reporting severe devastation. Early reports indicate that the Sendai area, the closest major city to the epicenter, has been severely impacted with significant loss of life.

In a phone conversation today, Dr. Marty Shaw, WorldVenture's Asia Ministries Director, reported that all WorldVenture personnel and Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists (FEB) International personnel in Japan have been accounted for and that they are physically okay. However, there is great concern for the people of the Sendai area where many of the Conservative Baptist Association (CBA) of Japan churches are located and where the Sendai Baptist Seminary is located.

Please join with with us and WorldVenture in praying for those impacted by these events that in the midst of their shock, anguish, and suffering, God's power and grace will meet their deepest needs. WorldVenture anticipates that in the days to come as the extent of the damage is better known, we will be responding with assistance.

Steve and Laura Reed, Beyond Partnership Director, report that Beyond Partnership, after 31 years with Missions Door, became independent. They thank all who prayed, supported and showered them with concern and friendship. They report also about Rigo, who left his high-paying position to work for Christ. Eleven years ago he moved from Honduras to Nicaragua, the least evangelized country in Central America to start churches. On July 26, 2011, Rigo, his family, and the first church he planted will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the first service. The service will celebrate that in this decade more than 20 churches have started, along with two vocational training schools, and beginning work for an agricultural training school and an academic Christian bilingual school for the poor. Prayer and praises for the work in the next decade.

Note: Steve will be at the Women's Missions Circle Meeting on March 8th. See the calendar for more details.

Gerry and Nancy Kraft, and Craig Kraft, Outreach Canada, send news of opened doors for ministry in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America, as well as Canada, training pastors and church planters, coaching churches, and helping to launch a new Global Church Planting Network.

They are also involved in university campus networking of Christian professors and students with church leaders, and are serving new businesses with chaplaincy services. A particular prayer request is for several churches in crisis that the Krafts are working with; without divine intervention they will end up divided and lose their effectiveness in their communities.

John and Estera Vatran, World Venture, give God great glory that, several years ago, with the unexpected approval and assistance of city hall, they started building and are about 80% finished building Mountain View Camp and Conference Center.

The camp has already been used for a pastor's conference, youth meetings and concerts. The chapel is designed for 150 people, but over 200 attended the first time. Pictures in their newsletter reflect the enthusiasm of the students and pastors, and the packed worship service in the chapel.

Paulo and Ireni Mota, Restoration Ministries, report in their Winter newsletter that they celebrated Kids Day, a national holiday, and had over 500 kids from local favelas attending the program.

One of their local church partners, a Brazilian Chinese church assisted them in holding the event, providing volunteers, lunch for the kids, and toys. The Mota's are so pleased for the partnership of this church; they had been a blessing for the ministry.

Also two new workers will be joining in the ministry. Tatiana and Wellington have been with Restoration Ministries for a long time, have a heart for Christ and have a passion for the underprivileged children. They will now be supported as full-time missionaries, through partnership with World Venture as International Partners Missionaries (IPM). Prayer is requested for these new workers as they go through the process of raising support and meeting sponsors.
